How judging works

What reviewers look for

How entries are judged

Reviewers are experienced artists. Entries are judged mainly on how well you use your own artistic vision to portray the theme, plus originality and creativity.

Theme and artistic vision

How clearly your piece portrays what your culture means to you, in your own voice.

Originality

Your own idea, made by you, and not a copy of something that already exists.

Creativity

The fresh choices you made, including your technique and how you used your medium.

Ask yourself before you submit

  • Would someone know this is about culture even without reading my statement?
  • What is one choice in this piece that only I would have made?
  • Does my statement explain my thoughts and feelings, not just describe what is in the piece?
  • Did I make every creative decision myself?

Rice Elementary judges score each entry out of 100 points: Interpretation 40 (how well the work and your artist statement show the theme), Creativity 30 (how original and imaginative it is) and Technique 30 (skill with your materials, considering your grade level). The artist statement can make a big difference, because it is where you explain your thoughts and feelings in your own words.
